Launched at RWM08 last month, LinkTip’s new ‘Polybuilt’ body delivers a staggering improvement in payload and is unlike anything else on the market. Figures based on the first model built show a massive 120% increase in available payload compared to a conventional steel body of a similar type on the same chassis.
For operators this obviously has a number of significant and tangible benefits. Firstly, operators will have the potential to more than double the load each vehicle can carry, meaning fewer journeys, better collection efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.
Roger Fleetwood, Managing Director of The LinkTip Kerbside Group says: “Using example figures, if you take a truck less than 7.5 tonnes doing 30,000 miles per annum, at an average fuel consumption of 32 mpg and increase its load capacity by 120% you have the potential to carry twice as much load. Switching to our polybuilt body could, according to carbon footprint data, add up to a saving per vehicle of over 11 tonnes of carbon every year.*
Then there’s the obvious fuel savings, Roger added: “Again working from a hypothetical scenario. Take a vehicle in a rural area which, because it’s utilised a plastic body, it can carry twice as much waste. Its ability to stay out on the road saves the operator a 60 mile round trip each day or 300 miles per week. If the truck does 30 mpg (and that’s generous) that’s a saving of two gallons of fuel per day – just over £10 a day or £50 a week (based on £1.20 a litre). Over a year you could save more than £2,500 and over the life of a vehicle, which averages seven years that figures rises to more than £18,000 per vehicle. Multiple that by the number of vehicles in your fleet, the total cost savings can be highly significant.
The body is suitable for a number of everyday collection activities being robust, non corrosive, resistant to chemicals, with high impact strength and available in a number of colours. Visitors to RWM08 had plenty of suggestions for operational use; with the food waste industry particularly impressed with the new body especially its easy clean credentials.
The body is also recyclable at the end of its lifecycle making it a truly versatile product in use and beyond.
The first body built is now in use with a local authority in the south of England. Manufactured in polypropylene, it has an 11 cubic metre capacity and is mounted on a Ford Transit 3500kg GVW. However, all customers will be able to specify a variety of body sizes and optional extra’s such as bin lifts.
Roger concluded: “Following LinkTip’s acquisition of Kerbside Recycling a few years ago, a plastic body was something we had very much in our minds and is a follow on development after the introduction of plastic stillages last year. We recognised a real need in the marketplace for a vehicle body of this type and the show has certainly confirmed this, with a phenomenal level of interest shown.”
