CLEANEST PLACE IN THE UK GETS MESHY!
Birmingham City Council's Fleet and Waste Management Division is responsible for the collection, recycling and disposal of over 500,000 tonnes of waste per annum that is generated in the city from households and businesses. Winner of the cleanest place in the UK award 2007-2009, the local authority has extended its substantial fleet again with the delivery of twelve mesh cage tipping bodies from LinkTip.
Having moved to a system of ward based cleaning, twelve wards are getting a new mesh cage vehicle to help with street cleaning duties including the removal of general litter as well as more bulky items.
Alan Schofield the Transport Manager for the local authority said: “LinkTip are on our preferred suppliers list and have always delivered a quality product. The vehicles are well built to our specification so we had no hesitation in specifying them on this contract.”
Birmingham’s waste statistics are pretty impressive with the city council:
-
• Providing weekly refuse collections to 420,000 households
• Providing fortnightly recycling collections to 378,000 households
• Trade waste collection service for 9,000 businesses
• Arranging 163,500 free bulky waste collections (sofas, fridges, furniture)
• Providing over 300,000 clinical and hazardous waste collections
• Organising over 730 Special Street Collections in all 40 wards
• Cleaning 2,487km of roads and 2,147km of pavements

They are one of the best performing authorities in the country collecting 570,000
tonnes of refuse a year, but only send around 16.24% of it to landfill, and they are planning to reduce that figure further.
